| The Re 620 was built to climb the Swiss mountain mainlines with the heaviest trains, while reducing the number of engines on each train. The requirement specifications stated that it should be able to haul (alone) 800 metric tonnes on the 2.6% grades of the Gotthard at track speed. The series was built in 1972 (4 prototypes), and 1975-1980 (85 units). |
