The "Lok 2000" in the dress of the Italian design company Pininfarina, which is still present today, was technically up to date in early 1990ties. As the SBB's first series converter locomotive, it was the fastest (230 kph / 145 mph) and, compared to its four-axle predecessors, also the most powerful (6100 kilowatts) machine. It was the first to be aerodynamically optimized and worked with the latest GTO converter technology at the time. In two respects, the Re 460 is also the last of its kind: the last “universal locomotive” and the last in-house development of the Swiss locomotive industry. Today most of them got a midlife update with IGBT-converters.
