By: | Peider SwissTrip | Dates: | 1/1/2012 - 1/31/2012 | Album Info: | Although entirely on Swiss territory, the Gotthard line forms a major part of an important international railway link between northern Europe, especially Germany, and Italy. After climbing alongside the Reuss river, it penetrates the Alps by means of the Gotthard Tunnel. The line then descends the Ticino river as far as Bellinzona, before climbing again to the Monte Ceneri Pass in order to reach Lugano and Chiasso. The summit of the line is within the Gotthard Tunnel at over 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above sea level, necessitating the use of long ramped approaches and for operating up to 1700 t freight trains two pulling and one pushing unit. Several spirals tunnels, horseshoes and other indirect routings are needed on each side to gain or lose height. The full line opened in 1882, following completion of the Gotthard Tunnel. Electrified quite early in 1922, as Switzerland had to import all coal from abroad. In 2016 the mountain route will be a thing of the past, as the new basic tunnel from Erstfeld to Biasca will open for traffic. It is still unclear, what will remain of the 134 year old route. Maybe for regional passenger trains it will keep at least one track (like Lötschberg) and is a fallback route, if for any reason the new basic tunnel is out of service. Information by Wikipedia and others. So, if you like to see the orginal track in operation come and visit it soon. If you need any help, just email me. |
