All in one: Tram, trolley, bus at city of Nancy / France.
Title:  All in one: Tram, trolley, bus at city of Nancy / France.
Description:  The current TVR (Transport sur Voie Réservée – transport on separate tracks) runs on its own guided site on about 60% of the line, and unguided, like an ordinary trolleybus, on the remaining 40%. Diesel-electric traction is mainly used only to drive vehicles to the depot, towards which there are no overhead wire lines , and when deviating lines (work, incidents, etc.)

Title:  All in one: Tram, trolley, bus at city of Nancy / France.
Description:  The unusual rubber tire tramway in Nancy is actually more akin to a double-articulated trolleybus using a single guide rail in the city center. The TVR is guided by a central rail, on which rollers (two per axle) rest. These rollers exert a pressure of 750 kilograms on the rail, which has several negative consequences such as rails and rollers are very stressed, it produces a reduction in the weight of the TVR (poorer grip) and in tight bend the first roller may escape when travelling faster than walking speed. ? An object inserted in the channel of the rail, such as a bolt or a stone, causes the guides to derail. The front guide wheel rises on the object, even if it is crushed. Rubbish, stones, bolts… are a major problem with TVR.

Description:  To engage the single track this platform guides the rollers into it. TVR can leave its guide rail to behave like a bus (or trolleybus). These operations can be done anywhere: you just have to raise the rollers to release the TVR from its constraint.

Description:  Even its called "tramway of Nancy" it uses for standard operation electric propulsion with poles, which require two power cables. This solution was selected as the line operates on a former trolleybus route.

Title:  All in one: Tram, trolley, bus at city of Nancy / France.
Description:  The central idea of TVR is rolling on tires for an overall flexibility. From regulation point of view, it is an ordinary bus. It is subject to the Highway Code, therefore number plate registered and limited to 13 tonnes per axle - it weighs 28 tonnes. Because all its wheels are steered, the TVR is almost single-track (all the wheels pass in the same place) when it is unguided.

All in one: Tram, trolley, bus at city of Nancy / France.
Title:  All in one: Tram, trolley, bus at city of Nancy / France.
Description:  I'm still a bit confused ... the presence of a guide rail deprives the Tramway of Nancy of its possible status as a bus or trolleybus, since technically it becomes a “guided bus” or a “guided trolleybus”. This "ugly" and expensive to operate system should be replaced by an ordinary tram solution in 2023 after 22 years in service. Picture: The right TVR is on diesel mode and off the rail and the powerlines. More to see on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pipX5_gtpM

France ATO operation tests with BB 427085.
Title:  France ATO operation tests with BB 427085.
Description:  In autumn 2021, the next stage has arrived. Fret SNCF Prima locomotive 427085 got a very unesthetic yet functional upgrade. At both fronts, it has extra equipment to test the autonomous train operation with the currently installed signaling systems. It is a series of optic sensors that support the ATO operation.

France ATO operation tests with BB 427085.
Title:  France ATO operation tests with BB 427085.
Description:  Two years after the launch in 2018 of a consortium to develop the prototype of an autonomous train, a Prima BB 27000 locomotive ran in partial autonomy on the national rail network between Longwy and Longuyon, in eastern France, on a line equipped with the European signalling system ERTMS, under the supervision of a driver. The consortium, consisting of Alstom, Altran, Apsys, Hitachi Rail, Railenium and SNCF, carried out all the steps that made this important trial possible: from the design to the description of the computer systems, cabling and software programming. As a result of this work, to which nearly a hundred people from all the partner companies contributed.

France ATO operation tests with BB 427085.
Title:  France ATO operation tests with BB 427085.
Description:  A Prima BB 27000 locomotive, which ran first time in partial autonomy in December 2020 along a ERTMS equipped line in eastern France was recently upgraded for ATO-tests on the network with existing “old” signaling systems. SNCF and its partners hope running a prototype in complete autonomy in 2023 independent of the type of signaling system.
